“He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.” — Psalm 23:2–3 (ESV)

Devotional Thought

There is an interesting phrase in these verses that caught my attention: “He makes me lie down.”

Have you ever stopped to think about that?If there is one group of people who often needs to be made to rest, it is us. We live in a culture that celebrates busyness. We fill every moment with work, entertainment, responsibilities, and endless distractions. Many of us wear exhaustion like a badge of honor. Rest feels almost irresponsible.

But our Good Shepherd knows better.Sometimes He lovingly brings us to a place where we have no choice but to slow down. It may come through a quiet morning with His Word, an unexpected change in our schedule, a season of waiting, or even difficult circumstances that force us to stop running. Whatever the method, His purpose is never to harm us. It is to care for us.

David says He makes us lie down in green pastures. Green pastures are places of nourishment. Sheep cannot survive without feeding, and neither can God’s people. Our souls need more than physical rest—they need spiritual nourishment. We need time in God’s Word, time in prayer, and time simply enjoying His presence.

David also says the Shepherd leads us beside still waters. Sheep are easily frightened by rushing water, but still waters provide a place of safety and peace. What a beautiful picture of what Christ does for His people. He calms our anxious hearts just as He calmed the storm on the Sea of Galilee. The same Savior who spoke, “Peace! Be still!” to the wind and waves still brings peace into the storms of our lives today.

And what is the result? “He restores my soul.”

Our souls grow weary under the constant pressure of life. Stress, anxiety, disappointment, and endless activity slowly drain us. When we refuse to rest in Christ, we begin to resemble sheep without a shepherd—harassed, helpless, and wandering.

But the Good Shepherd knows exactly what His sheep need. He brings us to places of rest, feeds us with His truth, surrounds us with His peace, and renews us from the inside out.

Perhaps today the Shepherd is inviting you to stop striving for just a little while. Slow down. Sit in the green pasture of His Word. Rest beside the still waters of His presence. Your soul may be longing for the very restoration only He can give.

Reflection Questions

1. Have you allowed the busyness of life to crowd out time with your Shepherd?

2. What “green pastures” has God provided that you may be neglecting?

3. What worries or stresses do you need to leave beside the Shepherd’s still waters today?

4. How can you intentionally make time this week to rest in God’s presence?

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for being my Good Shepherd who knows exactly what I need. Forgive me for allowing busyness and worry to crowd out my time with You. Lead me into the green pastures of Your Word and beside the still waters of Your peace. Restore my weary soul and teach me to find true rest in Your presence. Help me trust Your leading every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
