Scripture Focus
“I thank my God always when I remember you in my prayers, because I hear of your love and of the faith that you have toward the Lord Jesus and for all the saints, and I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective for the full knowledge of every good thing that is in us for the sake of Christ. For I have derived much joy and comfort from your love, my brother, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you.” — Philemon 1:4–7 (ESV)
Devotional Thought
As I was reading through Philemon, verse 6 especially caught my attention:
“And I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective…”
I know I have read that verse many times before, but I do not think its meaning had fully settled into my understanding until now. At first glance, the wording can seem a little difficult to follow, but the deeper meaning is actually both simple and powerful.
Paul is not merely praying that Philemon would talk about his faith more often. He is praying that Philemon’s faith would visibly demonstrate itself through the way he lived. In other words, that his faith would become so active and fruitful through good works that others could clearly see the transforming power of Christ in him.
John Calvin explains it this way: faith does not remain hidden and inactive inside the heart. True faith “communicates itself” outwardly through actual effects. It becomes visible in the life of the believer. Good works do not create saving faith, but they reveal that faith is genuine and alive.
That is exactly what Paul saw in Philemon. His faith was not theoretical. It was not confined to private beliefs or religious words. His love for Christ overflowed into love for God’s people. Paul says the hearts of the saints had been “refreshed” through him. Philemon’s life strengthened, encouraged, and comforted other believers.
That is an important reminder for us today. Christianity is not merely agreeing with correct doctrine, attending church, or knowing Bible verses. Genuine faith changes people. It changes our attitudes, our priorities, our speech, our generosity, our compassion, and the way we treat others. Over time, those changes become difficult to deny.
Paul’s prayer is really a wonderful prayer for every believer:
Lord, let my faith become effective. Let it become visible. Let others see the transforming work of Christ in me through the good things You are producing in my life.
Not for personal praise, but “for the sake of Christ.”
When Christ truly changes a heart, that change inevitably begins to show itself outwardly. And when believers live out their faith faithfully, they refresh and strengthen the people around them just as Philemon did.
Reflection Questions
- Would the people around me see clear evidence that my faith is active and genuine?
- In what ways has Christ visibly changed my life since I began following Him?
- Do my actions refresh and encourage other believers, or do they discourage them?
- What good works might God be calling me to pursue more faithfully as evidence of His work in me?
Prayer
Lord, thank You for the transforming power of the Gospel. Forgive me for the times when my faith has remained hidden or inactive. Help my faith to become effective and visible through the way I live, speak, love, and serve others. Produce in me the kind of life that refreshes and encourages fellow believers and points people clearly to Christ. Let every good thing You produce in me bring glory to Jesus alone. Amen.
