Today, If You Hear His Voice

Scripture Focus

“Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness… Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. – Hebrews 3:7-8, 12-13 (ESV)

Devotional Thought

One of the greatest dangers in the Christian life is not open rebellion at the beginning, but gradual hardening over time. Hebrews 3 warns believers, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” That warning was first spoken to Israel in the wilderness, but the writer of Hebrews makes it clear that it still applies to us today.

The Israelites had seen the power of God repeatedly. They witnessed miracles in Egypt, crossed the Red Sea, ate manna from heaven, and drank water provided by God in the desert. Yet despite all of this, they continually doubted Him, complained against Him, and resisted His voice. Their problem was not a lack of evidence—it was a hardening heart.

That is what makes this warning so sobering. Hardness of heart does not usually happen instantly. Sin works deceitfully and gradually. Satan does not normally lead people into open rebellion in a single moment. Instead, he approaches subtly and indirectly, slowly dulling conviction, weakening faith, and cooling spiritual affections until the heart becomes resistant to God.

That process can happen to any of us if we are careless.

A person who once responded quickly to conviction can begin ignoring it. A believer who once treasured God’s Word can slowly become spiritually indifferent. Prayer becomes inconsistent, worship becomes routine, and obedience becomes negotiable. Over time, what once troubled the conscience no longer seems serious at all. That is the deceitfulness of sin.

The remedy Scripture gives is both urgent and practical: “Exhort one another every day.” God never intended believers to fight spiritual battles in isolation. We need encouragement, correction, reminders, accountability, and faithful voices around us that continually point us back to Christ. Faith must be stirred up regularly because our hearts naturally drift.

The repeated word “today” is also important. God’s call is always urgent. We are not promised tomorrow. Every moment we hear His voice through His Word is an opportunity to respond in faith and obedience. Delayed obedience is dangerous because a neglected heart rarely becomes softer with time on its own.

If God is convicting you today, do not resist Him. Do not excuse sin, delay repentance, or ignore His voice. A soft heart toward God is a gift of grace that must be guarded carefully. Today is the day to listen, repent, believe, and obey.

Reflection Questions

  1. Are there areas in my life where I have been resisting or ignoring God’s voice instead of responding in obedience?
  2. How have I seen the “deceitfulness of sin” slowly harden hearts—either in my own life or in the lives of others?
  3. Am I actively encouraging other believers in their walk with Christ, or have I become spiritually isolated and passive?
  4. What is God calling me to do “today” that I may have been putting off through fear, unbelief, or spiritual complacency?

Closing Prayer

Lord, forgive me for the times I have resisted Your voice or allowed my heart to grow cold. Protect me from the deceitfulness of sin and strengthen my faith to remain steadfast in You. Help me to respond in obedience while it is still called “today,” and use me to encourage others to walk faithfully with Christ. Keep my heart soft, attentive, and fully devoted to You. Amen.
