Do Not Delay Doing Good

Scripture Focus

“Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it. Do not say to your neighbor, ‘Go, and come again, tomorrow I will give it’—when you have it with you.” – Proverbs 3:27–28 (ESV)

Devotional Thought

Proverbs 3 reminds us that righteousness is not only about believing what is right—it is also about doing what is right at the right time. These verses warn against withholding good when we have both the opportunity and the ability to give it.

Often the temptation is not outright refusal, but delay. We may intend to help someone, pay a debt, offer encouragement, or meet a need—but we postpone it. We promise we will take care of it later. Yet Scripture teaches that delaying good can be a form of withholding it. If we have the ability to help today, wisdom tells us not to put it off until tomorrow.

This command touches many areas of life. It includes paying honest debts and giving fair wages to those who have worked for us. It includes caring for family members who depend on us and fulfilling responsibilities we owe to others. It also calls us to acts of kindness, generosity, and compassion toward those in need.

At the heart of this command is the condition of our hearts. Sometimes people delay doing good because they love their money too much, because they do not feel urgency to help, or because they enjoy the control that comes from making others wait. But a heart shaped by God’s wisdom responds differently. It acts quickly, generously, and willingly when an opportunity to do good appears.

Another reason not to delay is the uncertainty of tomorrow. We are not promised another day. Opportunities to bless others may disappear if we postpone them. A need that could be met today may become a missed opportunity tomorrow.

But the greatest motivation for doing good is not merely duty—it is the grace we ourselves have received from God. The Lord did not delay when we were in our greatest need. In His mercy, He forgave us and saved us through Christ at just the right moment. Because we have received such grace, we should be eager to show grace to others. When we act with generosity, mercy, and kindness, we reflect the goodness God has already shown to us.

Reflection Questions

  1. Are there responsibilities or acts of kindness you have been postponing?
  2. Why do we sometimes delay doing good even when we are able?
  3. How does remembering God’s grace toward you motivate you to show grace to others?

Closing Prayer

Lord, help me not to delay when opportunities arise to do what is right. Guard my heart from selfishness and excuses. Give me a generous spirit that is ready to help, serve, and show kindness whenever it is within my power. Remind me that the grace I show to others flows from the grace You first showed to me through Christ. Amen.
