Playing with Fire

“Can a man carry fire next to his chest and his clothes not be burned? Or can one walk on hot coals and his feet not be scorched?” – Proverbs 6:27–28 (ESV)

Devotional Thought

Proverbs 6 uses a vivid picture to warn about the danger of adultery. Solomon asks two obvious questions: Can someone hold fire against their chest without being burned? Can a person walk on hot coals without scorching their feet? The answer is clear—of course not. Fire always burns.

In the same way, sin always brings consequences. The immediate context here is adultery, but the principle applies to many sins driven by human passions. When a person allows desire, lust, anger, greed, or pride to rule the heart, they place themselves dangerously close to spiritual fire.

One of the great deceptions of sin is the belief that we will be the exception. Others may fall. Others may be ruined. But we quietly convince ourselves that we can flirt with temptation and still escape unharmed. Yet Scripture tells us this thinking is foolish. To toy with temptation is like playing with fire—it is only a matter of time before the burn comes.

The path toward serious sin often begins with small compromises. A person entertains temptation, spends time in places of moral danger, or keeps company that encourages sinful behavior. What begins as curiosity soon becomes entanglement. Like a fly drawn to a flame, the person who toys with temptation often destroys himself by lingering too close.

Proverbs reminds us that adultery—and many other sins—place a person on the road to destruction. The presumptuous sinner says in his heart, “I can do this and still be safe.” But God will not hold the guilty blameless. The fire of sinful desire does not stay contained; it spreads and consumes.

The wise response is not to see how close we can get to temptation without falling. Wisdom teaches us to flee from it entirely. Instead of playing near the fire, we guard our hearts, our relationships, and our environments so that sinful passions do not gain control.

God’s warnings in Scripture are not meant to restrict our joy—they are meant to protect our lives. Just as a loving parent warns a child not to touch a flame, God warns His people because He knows the destruction sin brings.

Reflection Questions

  1. Are there areas of temptation in your life where you have been getting too close to the fire?
  2. Have you ever justified a sinful choice by believing you could avoid the consequences?
  3. What practical steps can you take to distance yourself from situations that encourage temptation?

Closing Prayer

Lord, You know how easily my heart can be drawn toward temptation. Help me not to play with the fire of sin or believe the lie that I can escape its consequences. Give me wisdom to flee from temptation and strength to guard my heart. Lead me in paths that honor You and protect my life. Amen.
