“You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book?” – Psalm 56:8 (ESV)
Devotional Thought
Psalm 56 was written during a time when David was surrounded by enemies and living under constant threat. His life was filled with uncertainty, wandering, and sleepless nights. In the middle of that distress, David expresses one of the most tender truths in all of Scripture: God sees every tear His people shed.
David pictures God as keeping a record of his suffering. He says that God counts his “tossings”—the restless nights filled with worry, fear, and grief. None of those moments are unnoticed. Even more striking is the image David uses next: “Put my tears in your bottle.” In ancient times, valuable liquids were carefully preserved in bottles or jars. David is saying that his tears are so precious to God that the Lord collects and preserves them.
This image teaches us that God observes the sorrows of His people with deep compassion. The Lord is not distant or indifferent to our struggles. When believers weep—whether from the pain of affliction, persecution, disappointment, or even grief over their own sin—those tears do not fall to the ground unnoticed. Scripture repeatedly reminds us of this truth. God told Hezekiah, “I have seen your tears” (2 Kings 20:5), and He heard Ephraim mourning in repentance (Jeremiah 31:18). Our sorrow is never hidden from the eyes of the Lord.
David also says that his tears are written in God’s book. This means that God not only sees them, but He remembers them. Just as people keep written records of important accounts, the Lord keeps a perfect record of the suffering of His people. None of their pain is forgotten. One day, when God’s purposes are fully revealed, those records will testify to both His justice and His compassion.
For those who have caused the suffering of God’s people, these tears will become witnesses of divine justice. God will reckon with those who have oppressed, mocked, or persecuted His children. But for the people of God themselves, these tears will become instruments of comfort. The same God who recorded them will also wipe them away.
Scripture promises that sorrow will not have the final word. God often allows His people to sow in tears so that they may later reap in joy. What was once a tear of grief will become a pearl of praise. The sackcloth of mourning will one day be replaced with garments of gladness, and the God who preserved every tear will also provide perfect consolation.

Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You that You see every sorrow and remember every tear. When my heart is heavy and my nights are restless, remind me that none of my suffering is hidden from You. Help me trust that You will use even my pain for Your purposes and that the tears I sow today will one day be turned into joy. Give me hope in Your compassion and faithfulness. Amen.
