Scripture Focus

“Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. For,

‘Yet a little while,
and the coming one will come and will not delay;
but my righteous one shall live by faith,
and if he shrinks back,
my soul has no pleasure in him.’

But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.” — Hebrews 10:35–39 (ESV)

Devotional Thought

The Christian life is not a short sprint—it is a lifelong race that requires endurance. Hebrews 10 was written to believers who were weary, pressured, and tempted to give up. Some were facing persecution. Others were discouraged because following Christ had become costly. The writer responds with both a warning and an encouragement: “Do not throw away your confidence.”

That word “confidence” speaks of bold trust in Christ. These believers had once stood firmly for the gospel, but hardship had created the temptation to retreat. The same danger exists for us today. Trials, suffering, disappointment, spiritual attacks, and the constant pressure of the world can slowly wear down our hearts if we are not grounded in faith.

The writer says plainly, “You have need of endurance.”

Why? Because the Christian life is filled with opposition. Satan uses countless strategies to discourage believers. He whispers that obedience is pointless, that suffering is wasted, or that compromise would make life easier. Without patience and steadfast faith, we would collapse under the weight of the struggle long before reaching the finish line.

But Hebrews reminds us that endurance is possible because God’s promises are certain.

The writer quotes Habakkuk and points believers forward to the coming of Christ: “Yet a little while, and the coming one will come and will not delay.” From our perspective, waiting often feels painfully slow. We want immediate relief, immediate answers, and immediate victory. But God is never late. He comes at the appointed time and sustains His people until then.

This is why the passage says, “the righteous shall live by faith.”

Faith is not merely how we begin the Christian life—it is how we continue. We live by trusting God when circumstances are unclear. We live by faith when trials remain unresolved. We live by faith when obedience is difficult and when the world opposes truth. Faith lifts our eyes beyond present suffering and fixes them on the certainty of God’s promises.

In contrast, the passage warns against “shrinking back.” Drawing back from God comes from prideful self-confidence and unbelief. It is the attitude that trusts human security more than God’s Word. But genuine faith produces perseverance. True believers continue pressing forward, not because they are naturally strong, but because God preserves them through faith.

The chapter closes with a beautiful statement of confidence:
“But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.”

What encouragement for weary Christians! Believers are not called to retreat but to endure. We have been called to keep trusting Christ, keep obeying His Word, and keep moving forward until the day He comes.

And that day is nearer now than when we first believed.

Reflection Questions

  1. What situations in your life are currently testing your endurance and faith?
  2. Are you tempted to become discouraged or “shrink back” in some area of obedience?
  3. How does the promise of Christ’s return strengthen you to keep persevering?
  4. What does it practically look like for you to “live by faith” this week?

Prayer

Lord, strengthen my heart to endure faithfully until the end. When trials, discouragement, and spiritual battles tempt me to give up, help me hold tightly to Christ with confidence and faith. Teach me to trust Your promises even when the road is difficult. Keep me from shrinking back in fear or unbelief, and help me continue walking in obedience until the day Jesus returns. Thank You for preserving Your people and sustaining us by Your grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
