“But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.” — Hebrews 9:26 (ESV)
Devotional Thought
Hebrews 9 draws our attention to one of the most glorious truths in all of Scripture: Jesus Christ accomplished what no earthly priest or repeated sacrifice could ever accomplish. Christ entered not into an earthly sanctuary made by human hands, but into heaven itself, appearing before the Father on our behalf.
Under the Old Covenant, the high priest entered the Most Holy Place year after year with the blood of animals. Those sacrifices were repeated continually because they could never fully remove sin. They pointed forward to something greater. Every sacrifice, every drop of blood, every priestly act was a shadow anticipating the coming of Christ.
But Jesus did not offer the blood of another. He offered Himself.
The writer of Hebrews emphasizes that Christ’s sacrifice was made “once for all.” Unlike the Levitical priests, Jesus does not need to repeat His offering because His sacrifice was perfect, complete, and eternally sufficient. If His sacrifice were incomplete, He would have needed to suffer repeatedly throughout history. Instead, Christ suffered once, and that one sacrifice fully satisfied the justice of God for all who trust in Him.
This is why believers can have confidence before God today.
Jesus now appears in the presence of the Father as our Advocate and High Priest. He stands there on our behalf, not pleading with uncertainty, but presenting the finished work of His own sacrifice. Because of Christ, believers no longer approach God through earthly priests, rituals, or repeated sacrifices. We come through the crucified and risen Savior who has already secured eternal redemption for us.
Hebrews reminds us that Christ came “at the end of the ages.” In other words, His coming fulfilled what all of redemptive history had been moving toward. The sacrifices, ceremonies, and promises of the Old Testament all find their fulfillment in Him. Nothing more is needed because Christ has completed the work.
That truth should fill our hearts with peace and gratitude. We do not live hoping Christ’s sacrifice might someday be enough. We rest in the certainty that it already is. Our sins are forgiven not because of repeated religious efforts, but because Jesus once and for all put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for being the perfect and eternal High Priest. Thank You that Your sacrifice was completely sufficient to pay for sin once and for all. Help me to rest in Your finished work instead of trusting in my own efforts. Remind me that You now stand in the presence of the Father on my behalf, securing grace, mercy, and forgiveness for all who belong to You. Fill my heart with gratitude, confidence, and worship as I remember the greatness of Your sacrifice. In Your name I pray, Amen.
