God Speaks- Who Is Listening?

“Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son…” – Hebrews 1:1–2a (ESV)

Devotional Thought

From the opening words of Hebrews, we are reminded of a central truth: God speaks. In the past, He spoke through prophets, visions, dreams, angels, and countless other ways. Every word and method pointed forward to His greater plan—redemption through Christ.

But in these last days, God has spoken to us through His Son. No longer through shadows, symbols, or distant voices, but through the radiance of His glory, the exact imprint of His nature. Jesus is not just another messenger—He is the message. He is the fulfillment of every prophecy, the final Word of God’s revelation, and the One who has made purification for our sins.

Why does God speak? Because He longs to make Himself known. Because He is merciful and gracious. Because we are His creation and He desires relationship with us. The heart of His communication, from Genesis to Revelation, has always been the same: redemption.

The sobering question then is not whether God has spoken—it is whether we are listening. Do we respond to His voice with gratitude, worship, and obedience, or with neglect and apathy? If a friend treated us the way we often treat God—ignoring, half-listening, or putting Him off—would we call that friendship?

God has spoken in His Son. Our response must be more than acknowledgment; it must be surrender.

Reflection Questions

1. Looking back at the many ways God spoke in the Old Testament, what does that reveal about His character and His desire for relationship with us?

2. How does knowing that Jesus is “the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His nature” change the way you view Him?

3. If God has spoken finally and fully in His Son, what excuses do we have for not listening and responding?

4. Consider your own walk with God—if your communication with Him mirrored your communication with a close friend, what would that relationship look like?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You that You are a God who speaks. From creation to the prophets, and now through Your Son, You have made Yourself known so that I may know You and be redeemed. Forgive me for the times I have ignored Your voice or treated my relationship with You casually. Lord Jesus, You are the radiance of God’s glory and the One who has purified me from sin. Open my ears and my heart to hear and respond. Teach me to seek You daily, to listen carefully, and to obey joyfully. May my life be a living response of worship to Your Word made flesh. In Your precious name, Amen.
