“Blessed is the one you choose and bring near, to dwell in your courts! We shall be satisfied with the goodness of your house, the holiness of your temple!” – Psalm 65:4 (ESV)
Devotional Thought
I remember as a boy going to my grandmother’s house often. We lived in the same small town, only about a quarter mile apart. She was right along my walk home from school, so I would stop in just to say hello. And when you walked into Mama Hill’s house, there was almost always something cooking on the stove. If there wasn’t, it wouldn’t be long before there was. Nobody left her house hungry—unless you told her no about ten times.
That memory came to mind when I read Psalm 65:4. David speaks of being brought near to God, dwelling in His courts, and being satisfied with His goodness. It paints a picture of welcome, provision, and fullness—but on a level far beyond anything we experience here.
But before we enjoy the blessing, we need to ask: how did we get there?
David is clear—we are blessed because God has chosen us and brought us near. We did not earn our way into His presence. We were not invited because of our goodness, worth, or effort. We are there because of His grace. As Paul writes in Ephesians 1:4, God chose His people in Christ before the foundation of the world. Even our desire for Him is a response to His prior work in us.
And what do we receive? We are brought near to God Himself. We are given the privilege of dwelling in His presence—not temporarily, but permanently. What may feel distant or abstract now will one day be our full and constant reality.
And then comes this beautiful promise: we shall be satisfied. Just as no one left my Mama Hill’s house hungry, no one who dwells in God’s presence will lack anything. But this satisfaction goes far deeper than physical provision. God satisfies the soul. Every longing, every emptiness, every unmet desire will be completely fulfilled in Him. His goodness will fill us, and His holiness will surround us.
In a world that constantly leaves us wanting more, God offers something entirely different—true and lasting satisfaction. To be near Him is to have everything we need.
We truly are blessed.

Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You for Your grace in choosing me and bringing me near. I have done nothing to deserve Your presence, yet You have welcomed me in. Forgive me for seeking satisfaction in things that cannot fill me. Teach me to find my joy in You alone. Help me to draw near to You daily and rest in the truth that You are more than enough. Shape my heart to desire You above all else. In Jesus’ name, amen.
