“Hear my voice, O God, in my complaint; preserve my life from dread of the enemy.” – Psalm 64:1 (ESV)
Devotional Thought
Psalm 64 opens with a deeply relatable request: not just for protection from the enemy—but from the dread of the enemy. David isn’t only concerned about what might happen; he’s overwhelmed by the fear of what could happen. And that hits close to home.
Often, the anticipation of something is worse than the thing itself. Fear grows in the mind, expands in the imagination, and begins to control our actions. How many opportunities have been missed, how many steps of obedience delayed, simply because of dread? Anxiety has a way of paralyzing us—keeping us awake at night, weighing on our bodies, and clouding our thinking.
We live in a world consumed by fear. Entire industries exist to manage it. Yet David points us to a far better solution—not avoidance, not self-reliance, but prayer. “Hear my voice, O God…”
David doesn’t suppress his fear—he brings it to God. He cries out honestly and asks the Lord not only to deal with the threat, but to deal with his heart. “Preserve my life from dread.” In other words, “Lord, don’t let fear rule me.”
That is a prayer of faith. Faith does not mean we never feel fear—it means we know where to take it. God is not overwhelmed by what overwhelms us. He is not intimidated by what intimidates us. What feels massive to us is effortless for Him.
So instead of letting dread take over, David teaches us to pray. To cry out. To place our fears into the hands of a God who is fully able to handle them. The truth is, God can handle your problems—and your fears about your problems.
So stop carrying what you were never meant to hold. Bring it to Him. Leave it with Him. And trust Him with whatever comes.

Closing Prayer
Lord, You know the fears that weigh on my heart—the things I dread and the anxieties that try to control me. Thank You that I can come to You honestly and cry out for help. Preserve me not only from danger, but from the fear of it. Strengthen my faith to trust You with every unknown and every uncertainty. Help me to lay my burdens at Your feet and rest in Your power and care. In Jesus’ name, amen.
