“Your clothing did not wear out on you and your foot did not swell these forty years.” — Deuteronomy 8:4 (ESV)

Devotional Thought

As Moses continues reminding Israel of their history with God, he mentions something here that I wonder if the people even noticed. For forty years they had traveled through the wilderness, yet their clothing did not wear out and their feet did not swell to the point that they could no longer continue their journey. We have clothing manufacturers today that make durability a major selling point, but I don’t know of any who will guarantee their merchandise for a forty-year journey! And while we have comfortable shoes designed specifically for walking and hiking, Israel certainly didn’t have Nike or Reebok furnishing them with footwear. Yet God sustained them every step of the way.

These were miracles, but they were the kind of miracles that could easily go unnoticed. There was no parting of the Red Sea, no thunder from Mount Sinai, and no dramatic moment when everyone stopped and watched God work. Their clothes simply kept lasting. Their feet simply kept carrying them. Day after day and year after year, God quietly provided what they needed. Perhaps those are some of the easiest miracles to overlook—the provisions of God that become so normal that we stop recognizing them as His provision.

How many small miracles go unnoticed in our own lives every day? Many of us live from month to month or even week to week without much financial security or savings. Yet somehow the bills get paid, there is food on the table, and we have clothes to wear and a place to sleep. I often joke that I haven’t missed many meals—and I might do well to miss a few! But behind the humor is something worth remembering: God has been faithful. We can become so accustomed to His provision that we focus on what we lack rather than stopping to thank Him for all the ways He has already cared for us.

Of course, that doesn’t mean God’s people never experience hardship, hunger, financial difficulty, sickness, or loss. Israel certainly knew hardship in the wilderness. The point is not that following God guarantees a trouble-free life, but that His faithfulness is often woven into the ordinary details of our lives. Sometimes we recognize His provision only when we look backward and realize, God carried me through that. He gave me what I needed. He sustained me when I didn’t know how I would make it.

There is also a beautiful Gospel picture hidden in these clothes that did not wear out. John Gill, commenting on this passage, connected Israel’s enduring clothing with the righteousness of Christ. Scripture often uses clothing as a picture of righteousness, and the righteousness Christ gives His people is not something that eventually wears thin or needs to be replaced. It is an everlasting righteousness. Our standing before God does not depend upon maintaining our own goodness but upon the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ credited to those who trust in Him. What Christ provides will never wear out.

Maybe today we should pay more attention to the small miracles. The meal on the table. The clothes in the closet. The strength to get through another day. The unexpected provision that arrived just when it was needed. The countless ordinary ways God has sustained us that we barely noticed at the time. And above all, we can thank Him for the greatest provision He has ever given us—Jesus Christ, whose righteousness covers us and whose grace will never wear out.

Closing Prayer

Father, forgive me for the many ways You provide for me that I so easily overlook. Thank You for the food I eat, the clothes I wear, the strength You give me, and the countless ordinary blessings that remind me of Your faithful care. Help me recognize the small miracles instead of taking them for granted. Most of all, thank You for Jesus and for the righteousness He provides—a righteousness that will never grow old, wear out, or fade away. Teach me to live each day with a grateful heart, remembering that every good gift comes from You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
