“But he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.” — Hebrews 7:24–25 (ESV)

Devotional Thought

One of the central themes of Hebrews is that Jesus Christ is superior to everything that came before Him under the Old Covenant. Hebrews 7 especially emphasizes that Jesus is the greater High Priest—the true and perfect priest after the order of Melchizedek.

Under the Levitical system, many priests were needed because every priest eventually died. Their ministry was temporary, incomplete, and limited by human weakness. No priest could continue forever, and no sacrifice they offered could permanently remove sin. The entire system pointed beyond itself to the coming of a greater Priest.

Hebrews tells us that Jesus is that greater Priest.

Unlike the priests descended from Aaron, Christ’s priesthood is permanent because He lives forever. Death cannot interrupt His ministry. His resurrection guarantees that He remains our High Priest eternally. That is why Hebrews says He is able to “save to the uttermost” those who come to God through Him. Jesus does not offer partial salvation, temporary cleansing, or uncertain hope. He completely and eternally saves His people.

What makes Christ uniquely qualified for this role is His absolute perfection. The Levitical priests had to offer sacrifices for their own sins because they themselves were guilty before God. Jesus never needed such a sacrifice because He is perfectly holy, innocent, undefiled, and separate from sinners. Though He fully entered our world and experienced temptation, suffering, rejection, and sorrow, He remained completely without sin.

This is why Christ alone can truly reconcile sinful people to a holy God.

Hebrews also reminds us that Jesus “always lives to make intercession” for His people. Even now, Christ continually represents believers before the Father. His work did not end at the cross or even at the resurrection. Our risen Savior still ministers on behalf of His people. His intercession is not a desperate attempt to convince the Father to love us; rather, it is the ongoing application of the finished work He accomplished through His once-for-all sacrifice.

What comfort this gives to believers.

Our salvation does not rest on our ability to hold ourselves together spiritually. It rests on a living Savior who never ceases to intercede for us. We do not approach God through earthly priests, religious rituals, saints, or angels. We come directly to the Father through Jesus Christ alone.

Because our High Priest lives forever, our hope remains secure forever.

The order of Melchizedek points to a priesthood greater than the temporary priesthood of the law. Melchizedek appeared in Scripture as both king and priest, foreshadowing Christ—the eternal King and eternal Priest. Jesus fulfills what the old covenant system could only symbolize. He is the true mediator who brings believers into the very presence of God.

And because He has opened the way, there is no longer a veil separating believers from God. Through faith in Christ, we now have confident access to the throne of grace.

Reflection Questions

  1. Why is it significant that Jesus’ priesthood is eternal instead of temporary?
  2. How does Christ’s sinlessness make Him the perfect mediator for sinners?
  3. What comfort do you find in knowing Jesus continually intercedes for believers?
  4. Are you relying fully on Christ’s finished work, or are you still trying to earn acceptance before God?
  5. How should confident access to God through Christ affect your prayer life and daily walk with Him?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for being our perfect and eternal High Priest. Thank You that Your sacrifice was sufficient once and for all, and that You continue to intercede for Your people even now. Help us to rest fully in Your finished work instead of trusting in ourselves. Give us confidence to draw near to God through You, knowing that our salvation is secure because You live forever. Strengthen our faith and help us walk daily in the hope and assurance You provide. In Your name we pray, Amen.
