Remembering His Faithfulness

Scripture Focus

“Has his steadfast love forever ceased? Are his promises at an end for all time? Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he in anger shut up his compassion?” Selah “Then I said, ‘I will appeal to this, to the years of the right hand of the Most High.’ I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your wonders of old. I will ponder all your work, and meditate on your mighty deeds. Your way, O God, is holy. What god is great like our God?” — Psalm 77:8–13 (ESV)

Devotional Thought

Have you ever felt abandoned by God? Have you ever prayed and felt like your words were bouncing off the ceiling? Have you ever wondered why everything seems to fall apart, even when you are sincerely trying to follow the Lord?

Psalm 77 speaks directly into moments like these. The Psalmist is not hiding his emotions or pretending everything is fine. His questions are raw and deeply honest: “Has His steadfast love forever ceased? Has God forgotten to be gracious?” These are the cries of someone wrestling with discouragement, doubt, and spiritual exhaustion.

Many believers experience seasons like this, though we often feel alone when they come. We may wonder if God has withdrawn from us or if His promises somehow no longer apply to our situation. But Scripture reminds us that even faithful believers throughout history have walked through valleys of confusion and sorrow.

What is remarkable in Psalm 77 is not merely the questions—it is where the Psalmist turns for help. Instead of allowing despair to consume him, he intentionally begins to remember.

“I will remember the deeds of the Lord.”

The Psalmist chooses to look back at the faithfulness of God. He remembers God’s mighty works, His miracles, His patience, His mercy, and His past deliverance. He reflects not only on what God has done in his own life, but also on the countless times God proved faithful to His people throughout Scripture.

This is one of the great remedies for discouragement: remembering the faithfulness of God.

How many times has God carried you through situations you thought would break you? How many prayers has He answered? How many times has He shown mercy when you did not deserve it? And when your own memory feels weak, Scripture gives us story after story of God sustaining His people through failure, suffering, fear, and impossible circumstances.

The same God who was faithful to Abraham, Moses, David, Elijah, Peter, and Paul is faithful today. He has not changed. As Hebrews 13:8 reminds us, Jesus Christ is “the same yesterday and today and forever.”

Feelings may fluctuate, circumstances may shake us, and trials may cloud our vision for a season, but God’s character never changes. His steadfast love has not ceased. His promises have not failed. He has not forgotten to be gracious.

When doubt comes, remember His faithfulness. When fear rises, meditate on His works. When your heart grows weary, return again to the unchanging character of God.

He has earned your trust again and again.

Father, thank You for Your steadfast love and faithfulness. Forgive us for the times we allow discouragement and fear to cloud our view of who You are. Help us remember Your goodness, Your mercy, and the countless ways You have sustained Your people throughout history and in our own lives. Strengthen our faith when we feel weak and remind us that You never change. Teach us to rest in Your promises and trust You even when our feelings and circumstances are difficult. In Jesus’ name, amen.
