“Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.” – Colossians 2:6–7 (ESV)

Devotional Thought

Paul gives us a simple but powerful truth: the Christian life continues the same way it begins. How did you receive Christ? Not by effort, not by earning, not by having everything figured out—but by faith. You trusted Him. You depended on Him. You came to Him with open hands, not a list of achievements.

Paul says, “so walk in Him.” In other words, don’t move on from that way of living—keep going in it.It’s easy to drift into a mindset where we begin by faith but then try to live by our own strength. We trust Jesus for salvation, but rely on ourselves for daily decisions, struggles, and growth. But authentic faith doesn’t work that way. It is not just something we believe privately—it is something we live out daily.

Every decision becomes an opportunity to trust Him. Every challenge becomes a call to depend on Him. Every step forward in the Christian life is not self-powered progress, but Spirit-led reliance.

Paul uses two images to describe this life. First, we are rooted in Christ—like a tree drawing constant nourishment from the soil. Our strength, stability, and growth come from staying connected to Him. Second, we are built up in Him—like a structure that is continually being strengthened and established over time. This is not instant maturity, but steady, ongoing growth.

And what is the result of this kind of life? “Abounding in thanksgiving.” When we truly live by faith—day by day, decision by decision—our hearts begin to overflow with gratitude. We see God’s hand more clearly. We recognize His provision more often. We become more aware that everything we have comes from Him.

Authentic faith doesn’t just begin with trusting Jesus—it continues that same way. The Christian life is not about graduating from dependence on Christ, but growing deeper in it.

Reflection Questions

1. In what areas of your life are you tempted to rely on yourself instead of trusting Christ daily?

2. What would it look like for you to “walk in Him” in your everyday decisions this week?

    3. Are you staying rooted in Christ through His Word and prayer, or trying to grow on your own?

    4. How has God’s faithfulness in your daily life led you to greater thankfulness?

    Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that I began my life with Christ by trusting in Him alone. Help me to continue in that same faith each day. Guard me from relying on my own strength, and teach me to depend on You in every decision, every challenge, and every step. Root me deeply in Christ, build me up in Him, and establish me firmly in the truth. Let my life overflow with gratitude as I see Your hand at work in me and around me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
