Better Than Plenty

Scripture Focus “Better is a little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure and trouble with it. Better is a dinner of herbs where love is than a fattened ox and hatred with it.” – Proverbs 15:16–17 (ESV)

Devotional Thought Proverbs 15 challenges how we measure what is “better” in life. The world says more is better—more money, more success, more comfort. But Scripture says something very different: better is not about how much you have, but about how you have it.

A little, when paired with the fear of the Lord, is far greater than great wealth that comes with anxiety, pressure, and emptiness. Wealth without God often brings trouble—restlessness, worry, and a constant striving for more. But even the smallest provision, when received with a right relationship with God, brings peace, contentment, and joy.

The same principle applies to relationships. A simple meal, even something as plain as herbs, becomes rich and satisfying when it is shared in love. But the finest feast, when surrounded by tension, bitterness, or conflict, loses its sweetness. Love makes little feel like much—while hatred makes abundance feel empty.

The issue is not possessions—it is priorities.God often allows His people to have less in this world so they can experience more of Him. A clear conscience, a life lived in obedience, and daily fellowship with God will always outweigh material abundance without Him. When we walk in the fear of the Lord and live in love with others, we discover a deeper kind of richness that the world cannot offer.

Better is not having more—it is having God.

Reflection Questions 1. Do I measure my life more by what I have, or by my relationship with God? 2. Am I content with what God has provided, or constantly striving for more? 3. Are my relationships marked more by love or by tension and conflict? 4. How can I cultivate greater gratitude and trust in God with what I have?

Closing Prayer Lord, teach me to value what You value. Help me to walk in the fear of the Lord and to live with a heart full of love. Guard me from chasing the empty promises of this world, and help me to find true contentment in You. Let my life be marked not by abundance of possessions, but by richness in faith, peace, and love. Amen.
