“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” – Psalm 46:10 (ESV)
Devotional Thought
Psalm 46:10 contains one of the most well-known commands in Scripture: “Be still, and know that I am God.” Yet these words carry more weight than a simple call to quiet reflection. They are a declaration of God’s sovereign authority over the world and a command directed both to His enemies and to His people.
For the enemies of God, this command is a warning. Nations may rage, rulers may boast in their power, and people may imagine they can oppose the purposes of God. Yet the Lord calls them to stop their striving and recognize the truth: He alone is God. No amount of rebellion, pride, or opposition can overthrow His will. Human plans rise and fall, but God’s purposes stand forever. Whether the world acknowledges it or not, the day will come when His name will be exalted among the nations and throughout the entire earth.
But these words are also spoken to God’s people as a source of comfort. When the world feels chaotic, when opposition rises, and when circumstances seem uncertain, the Lord calls His people to be still—not in fear or despair, but in quiet confidence. To “be still” means to cease our anxious striving and rest in the knowledge that God is still on His throne. He is not overwhelmed by the turmoil of the world, and He has not lost control of history.
Believers do not need to defend God’s honor as if it depended on human strength. The Lord is fully capable of accomplishing His own purposes. He will glorify His name, fulfill His promises, and establish His kingdom in His perfect timing. Our role is to trust Him, remain faithful, and rest in the certainty that His plans cannot fail.
Even when our own lives feel small or overlooked, we can take comfort in this truth: God will be exalted. His glory will fill the earth, and every knee will ultimately bow before Him. When we pray, “Father, glorify Your name,” we can pray with confidence, knowing that He has already declared His intention to do exactly that.

Closing Prayer Heavenly Father, help me to be still and remember that You alone are God. When the world feels chaotic and my heart is anxious, remind me that You are sovereign over all things.
