What Does “Born Again” Mean?

Scripture Focus. “Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” … That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind[e] blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” -John 3:3, 6–8 (ESV)

Devotional Thought. The phrase “born again” is often tossed around casually in our culture—used in politics, testimonies, and even marketing slogans. Yet Jesus meant something far deeper than a catchphrase. To be born again is not about church membership, baptism, or repeating the right prayer. It is about a supernatural act of God in which His Spirit awakens a spiritually dead heart and gives it life.

Nicodemus, a religious expert, thought he had everything figured out, but Jesus told him plainly: without new birth, he couldn’t even see the Kingdom of God. Spiritual rebirth is not something we can manufacture or manipulate—it is a miracle of grace. Like the wind, we cannot control the Spirit of God, but we can see the evidence of His work in changed lives, new desires, and awakened hearts.

Being born again means more than simply claiming the name “Christian.” It means that God has given you a new nature, new affections, and a new vision for His Kingdom. It is not something you can package or program—it is something you must humbly receive.

Reflection Questions. 1. How has the phrase “born again” been misunderstood in your own experience or community? 2. What evidence in your life points to the Spirit’s transforming work, not just outward religion? 3. Do you see yourself more like Nicodemus—knowing much about God but needing His Spirit to bring true life? 4. How does recognizing God’s sovereignty in new birth humble and deepen your dependence on Him?

Closing Prayer Lord, I confess that I cannot bring about new life in myself or in anyone else. Only Your Spirit can awaken dead hearts and open blind eyes. Thank You for the miracle of new birth that allows me to see and enter Your Kingdom. Keep me from reducing salvation to empty words or formulas, and help me to treasure the work of Your Spirit. Let my life bear evidence of being born again, and may others see the power of Your grace in me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
