Scripture Focus
“I do not sit with men of falsehood, nor do I consort with hypocrites. I hate the assembly of evildoers, and I will not sit with the wicked.”— Psalm 26:4–5 (ESV)
Devotional Thought
Psalm 26 reveals that integrity is not only about what we refuse to do, but also about whom we choose to walk with. David’s commitment to righteousness shows itself in his relationships. He understands a timeless truth later echoed by the apostle Paul: “Bad company corrupts good character” (1 Corinthians 15:33). Character is shaped over time by the voices we listen to and the people we allow closest to us.
David speaks both of past obedience and future resolve: “I have not sat with them, and I will not go in with them.” His integrity is not accidental—it is intentional. Faithfulness in the past becomes the foundation for perseverance in the future. Obedience that endures is marked not only by good beginnings, but by steadfast continuation.
Matthew Henry notes that David avoided not only openly wicked people, but also vain and hypocritical companions—those whose lives are empty of seriousness toward God or whose words conceal harmful intentions. Such influences can be especially dangerous because they often appear harmless. Wisdom requires discernment, not just avoidance of obvious evil.
David does not claim isolation from the world. He acknowledges that there are times when contact with ungodly people is unavoidable. Yet he refuses to sit with them—to linger, align, or be shaped by their ways. He may cross paths with them, but he will not choose them as companions.
Psalm 26 reminds us that guarding our relationships is both a sign of integrity and a means by which God preserves it.
Reflection Questions
- Who has the greatest influence on my character right now?
- Are there relationships that subtly pull my heart away from faithfulness?
- How can past obedience strengthen my resolve to persevere in integrity?
Closing Prayer
Lord, give me wisdom to choose my companions carefully and courage to walk in integrity. Guard my heart from influences that would quietly draw me away from You. Help me persevere in faithfulness—not only in what I do, but in the company I keep. Amen.
