Making Disciples Like Paul

Scripture Focus

“You yourselves know how I lived among you the whole time from the first day that I set foot in Asia, serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials that happened to me through the plots of the Jews; how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you in public and from house to house.”
Acts 20:18–20 (ESV)

Devotional Thought

When Paul gathered the Ephesian elders to say farewell, he didn’t talk about his accomplishments or his miracles. Instead, he reminded them of how he lived among them — with humility, tears, and courage. His legacy wasn’t built on sermons but on life shared.

That’s what disciple-making really looks like. It’s not a program or a class. It’s people walking together toward Jesus. Paul modeled this by opening his life to others — teaching publicly and from house to house, investing in people’s hearts as much as their understanding.

He didn’t shrink from telling the truth, even when it was uncomfortable. He endured trials, betrayals, and tears, yet kept teaching, encouraging, and protecting the flock. His mission wasn’t popularity, but faithfulness. His ministry wasn’t about drawing crowds, but forming disciples.

Paul’s words remind us that disciple-making starts with presence. We must be with people, not just around them. We must be real, not perfect. We must teach truth, even when it challenges. We must guard the flock, helping others stay grounded in Scripture. And we must serve generously, remembering Jesus’ own words: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

When we live this way, we don’t just make converts — we make disciples who know, love, and reflect Christ.

Reflection Questions

  1. Who has discipled me through their example of humble faith?
  2. How can I be more intentional about walking closely with someone in their faith journey?
  3. Which of Paul’s disciple-making qualities — humility, honesty, truth-telling, focus, protection, or service — do I need to grow in most?
  4. What small step can I take this week to help someone follow Jesus more closely?

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for giving me people who have shown me what it means to follow You. Help me live a life that points others toward You — with humility, truth, love, and perseverance. Teach me to walk closely with others, to speak truth in love, to protect those who are weak, and to serve with joy. May my life become a living testimony of Your grace, just as Paul’s was. Amen.
