Scripture Focus
“I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites… be wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil. The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.” — Romans 16:17–20 (ESV)
Devotional Thought
Paul’s final words in Romans are not soft or sentimental — they are a warning. He urges the church to remain vigilant, because not everyone who talks about Jesus truly serves Him. Some enter with polished speech and apparent spiritual concern, but what they really want is influence, control, or applause. Their goal is not unity, but power.
Division rarely begins with loud rebellion. It often starts quietly — a whisper of doubt here, a hint of criticism there, a private conversation questioning leadership or doctrine. The seeds of discord are sown subtly, often wrapped in false humility or selective Scripture use. Paul calls it deception aimed at “the hearts of the naive.”
This is spiritual warfare.
And the enemy loves to do his most destructive work within church walls.
But Paul gives hope: “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.”
The God who brings peace is also the God who conquers evil. He crushes Satan’s schemes where truth is embraced, humility is practiced, and unity is protected. Churches that stay grounded in sound doctrine and pure devotion to Christ become battlegrounds where the enemy is defeated — not welcomed.
Paul’s desire for believers is clear:
• Be wise to what is good — know the truth well.
• Be innocent to what is evil — refuse to play with sin or gossip.
• Watch out — stay alert to subtle divisiveness.
• Avoid them — protect the flock by taking a stand.
A united church is a powerful testimony. A divided church is a tragic victory for the enemy.
May we be watchful, humble, and faithful — so that Satan’s plans are not simply slowed… but crushed under our feet by the God of peace.
Reflection Questions
1. Have I ever entertained or spread divisive conversations under the guise of “concern”?
2. How can I grow in discernment to recognize flattery and false motives?
3. What steps can I take to actively support unity and truth in my church?
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, protect Your church from the enemy’s schemes. Give us discernment to recognize deception and courage to stand for truth. Make us wise to what is good, innocent to what is evil, and united in our devotion to You. Crush every plan of Satan that seeks to divide Your people, and let Your peace reign among us. Amen.
