The Eyes of Your Heart

Scripture Focus

“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!” – Matthew 6:22–23 (ESV)

Devotional Thought

Jesus teaches that the eye is the lamp of the body, but He is speaking in more than physical terms. Just as our physical eyes guide the direction of our steps, so our spiritual sight—the conscience, the heart, the inner focus—guides the direction of our lives.

If the “eye” of your heart is clear and fixed on God, then your life will be filled with His light. A God-centered heart produces wisdom, discernment, and decisions that glorify Him. Like a lamp shining in the darkness, a healthy spiritual focus illuminates every part of your life.

But if the eye is clouded—if the heart is darkened by sin, pride, or divided loyalties—the whole life is affected. Darkness spreads, twisting our perspective, confusing our choices, and leading us into paths of destruction. “If the light in you Is darkness, how great is that darkness!” Jesus warns us that this is not a small matter—it is the difference between living in truth or stumbling in deception.

The question then becomes: What fills the “eye” of your heart? Is your gaze fixed on Christ, or is it distracted by worldly pursuits? To guard the heart is to guard the whole of life.

Reflection Questions

1. What are the main influences that capture your heart and attention daily?

2. In what ways do you see God’s light guiding your decisions when your focus is fixed on Him?

3. Are there areas in your life where your spiritual sight has been clouded? How might you surrender those to God?

Closing Prayer

Lord, I want my heart, my inner eye, to be fixed on You. Cleanse me from anything that clouds my vision and draws me into darkness. Fill me with Your light so that every part of my life reflects Your truth. Teach me to see with a pure heart, to walk in wisdom, and to live in the brightness of Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
