Scripture Focus
“If anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness, he is puffed up with conceit and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for controversy and for quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions, and constant friction among people who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain.” – 1 Timothy 6:3-5 (ESV)
Devotional Thought
Paul warns Timothy—and us—that not every teaching that wears a Christian label is healthy. The standard is clear: Does it agree with the sound words of Christ? Does it lead to godliness? If not, it leads to arrogance, pointless disputes, and broken fellowship.
Sound doctrine is not dry or lifeless—it is food for the soul. John Gill described it as “milk for babes and meat for strong men.” It nourishes, strengthens, and produces fruit in the believer’s life. False teaching, on the other hand, is like junk food—tasty to some, but ultimately harmful.
One of Satan’s oldest strategies is to twist God’s truth ever so slightly. That’s why Paul presses Timothy to guard the teaching of the church. A different doctrine might seem harmless at first, but its fruit betrays it: pride, arguments, jealousy, suspicion, and constant division.
As believers, our role is not to win debates but to let Scripture speak. Where God has spoken, we should hold fast with boldness. Where God is silent, we must learn to remain humble and silent too. When we cling to Christ’s words, we are anchored in truth that transforms lives and conforms us to godliness.
Reflection Questions
1. How can you discern whether a teaching is “sound” or if it departs from the words of Christ?
2. Why do you think false doctrine so often leads to pride, arguments, and division instead of humility and godliness?
3. Are there areas in your own walk where you may be tempted to go “beyond what is written” instead of simply letting Scripture speak?
4. Have you ever seen fruit in your life (or others) that revealed whether a doctrine was healthy or unhealthy? What did you learn?
Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You for giving us the unshakable truth of Your Word. Keep me from chasing after ideas that sound good but lack the power to transform. Guard my heart from pride, arguments, and distractions that only cause division. Teach me to love Your truth, to speak it with humility, and to measure everything by the words of Christ. May my life reflect the fruit of sound doctrine—godliness, humility, and love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
