“A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” – Proverbs 18:24 (ESV)

Devotional Thought

Proverbs 18:24 gives us a powerful contrast between two kinds of relationships: many shallow companions and one faithful friend.

Interestingly, different translations handle the first half of this verse in slightly different ways. Modern translations like the ESV emphasize the danger of having many superficial friendships—relationships that lack depth, loyalty, and true care. Older translations, like the KJV, highlight the responsibility of being friendly if we desire friendship. While the wording differs, the message ultimately points in the same direction: friendship is not about quantity, but quality.

Solomon is not discouraging relationships—he is directing us toward the right kind of relationship. A life filled with shallow, surface-level connections may leave a person empty, unsupported, and even vulnerable in times of need. But one true friend—loyal, steady, and committed—is of far greater value.

Matthew Henry captures this beautifully when he explains that such a friend brings great comfort, especially in times of adversity. While family bonds are strong and important, there are moments when a true friend—bound not by blood but by love—proves even more faithful. When life presses in, when trials come, when others drift away, this kind of friend remains.

And ultimately, this verse points us to something even greater. Jesus Christ is the truest fulfillment of this kind of friendship. He is the Friend who never abandons His people. He stays when others leave. He loves with a perfect, sacrificial love. He bore our sin, walks with us in our struggles, and promises never to forsake us. There is no friend more faithful than Him.

But this truth also challenges us. If we desire deep, faithful friendships, we must also be that kind of friend. Loyalty, consistency, and sacrificial love are not just qualities we seek—they are qualities we are called to show. In a world full of shallow connections, God calls us to something deeper: to be people who love faithfully—and to rest in the perfect friendship we have in Christ.

Reflection Questions

  1. Do your current friendships tend to be deep and meaningful, or mostly shallow and surface-level?
  2. Are you the kind of friend who is loyal and consistent, especially in difficult times?
  3. How have you experienced the faithfulness of Christ as a friend in your own life?
  4. Is there someone God may be calling you to encourage, support, or walk alongside more intentionally?

Closing Prayer

Lord, thank You for being the Friend who never leaves me. Thank You for Your faithfulness, Your love, and Your constant presence in my life. Help me not to chase shallow relationships, but to pursue meaningful, Christ-centered friendships. Teach me to be a faithful and loving friend to others, just as You have been to me. Strengthen my heart to reflect Your loyalty and grace in the relationships You have given me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
