Scripture Focus
“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices! Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil. For the evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land.” – Psalm 37:7–9 (ESV)
Devotional Thought
Psalm 37 speaks to a frustration every believer has felt at some point: watching dishonest, selfish, or even cruel people succeed while those who pursue integrity struggle. It can feel unfair. It can even feel like God is silent. David gives us three clear commands.
1. Be still before the Lord and wait patiently.
This is not a bitter silence. It is not sulking. It is submissive trust. To “be still” is to quiet your restless heart before a sovereign God. Whatever is happening right now, the Lord has not lost control, and He has not forgotten you. Waiting on Him is not weakness—it is faith in action.
2. Do not fret.
Fretting is more than worry—it carries the idea of agitation, envy, and inward irritation. When we see wickedness rewarded, our hearts can become unsettled. But David reminds us that prosperity gained through evil is temporary. It may last a season, perhaps even a lifetime, but it cannot outlast eternity. God’s justice is sure. And remember: God’s greatest blessings are not measured in money or possessions, but in His presence, peace, and eternal inheritance.
3. Refrain from anger.
There is a short step from envy to bitterness, and from bitterness to anger—either toward the wicked or even toward God. We may be tempted to think, “If that’s how the system works, maybe I should play by those rules.” That path leads only to sin. This world’s system rewards those willing to claw, manipulate, and take advantage of others. God’s kingdom blesses the gracious, loving, and generous. The two systems operate very differently—and only one lasts forever.
David ends with a promise: “The evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land.” The wicked may appear to rise quickly, but their end is certain. Those who wait on the Lord inherit what truly matters.
Trust Him—even if you never receive the same material success. What God gives His people is far greater and far more lasting.

Closing Prayer
Father, when I see wickedness prosper, steady my heart. Keep me from envy, bitterness, or anger. Help me to be still before You and to wait patiently for Your perfect justice. Guard me from adopting the world’s ways, and teach me to trust that what You promise is better and eternal. Amen.
