The Easy Way or the Hard Way

Scripture Focus

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle, or it will not stay near you.” — Psalm 32:8–9 (ESV)

Devotional Thought

As I read Psalm 32, verses 8 and 9 stood out to me because, if I am honest, I have learned God’s lessons both ways David describes. There is an easy way to learn from the Lord… and there is a hard way.

God speaks first with grace. Notice His heart in verse 8: “I will instruct you… teach you… counsel you with my eye upon you.” This is the language of personal, attentive care. God is not distant or harsh by nature—He is a loving Instructor who watches over His children and guides them gently through His Word and Spirit.

Yet verse 9 gives a warning: “Be not like a horse or a mule.” These animals must be forced into submission with a bit and bridle because they lack understanding and resist the rider’s guidance.

If we’re honest, many of us have lived like that mule. How often has God gently nudged us through His Word, through wise counsel, or through the quiet conviction of the Spirit—only for us to resist? We delay obedience. We justify our choices. We listen to the flesh whispering about the supposed freedom and pleasure of sin.

And because God loves us too much to leave us there, He sometimes disciplines us.

Like a loving parent, the Lord’s heart is not to be harsh but to be helpful. We’ve all said something similar to our children: “I don’t want to have to discipline you—but I will if I must, because this lesson matters.” In the same way, God’s correction is never cruel; it is purposeful and rooted in love (Hebrews 12:6).

The wise believer learns to respond to God’s eye before feeling God’s bridle. Wouldn’t it be far better to walk closely with the Lord—sensitive to His Word, quick to obey, eager to follow—rather than forcing Him to get our attention through painful discipline?

God’s instructions are always for our good. The sooner we trust that, the more peaceful and fruitful our walk with Him will be. Don’t be like the mule. Listen. Obey. Stay near.

Reflection Questions

  1. In what areas of life has God been gently instructing me lately?
  2. Am I resisting any clear direction from God’s Word?
  3. Have I learned some lessons the hard way that I could have learned through simple obedience?
  4. What practical step of obedience can I take today?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for being a patient and loving Instructor. Forgive me for the times I have been stubborn and resistant to Your guidance. Give me a soft heart that responds quickly to Your Word and Your Spirit. Help me to walk closely with You so I do not need harsh discipline to learn what You are teaching me. Teach me to trust that Your ways are always for my good. In Jesus’ name, amen.
