Scripture Focus
“So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, ‘It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.’ But he answered them, ‘The man who healed me, that man said to me, “Take up your bed, and walk.”’” — John 5:10–11 (ESV)
Devotional Thought
For thirty-eight years, the crippled man at the Pool of Bethesda lived with disappointment, helplessness, and long seasons of waiting. Then, in a single moment, Jesus stepped into his story and changed everything. But instead of celebration, controversy erupted.
The religious leaders were not amazed by the miracle—they were offended by the interruption. In their zeal to protect their traditions, they completely missed the work of God standing right in front of them.
This account reminds us that God often works in ways that disrupt our expectations. He may interrupt our carefully constructed plans, comfortable routines, or familiar traditions in order to accomplish something far greater than we imagined. What feels inconvenient to us may actually be divine mercy at work.
The contrast in this passage is striking. The Jewish leaders clung tightly to their system and missed the miracle. The healed man, however imperfect his understanding, obeyed the voice of Jesus and stepped into new life.
We face that same crossroads today. When God interrupts us—through unexpected changes, closed doors, new opportunities, or uncomfortable convictions—we must decide how we will respond. Will we resist and retreat into what feels safe and familiar? Or will we trust Christ enough to obey, even when His direction stretches us?
God’s interruptions are rarely random. They are often invitations—calls to deeper faith, greater dependence, and fuller obedience. Sometimes He disrupts our plans to correct our course. Sometimes to grow our faith. Sometimes to place us exactly where He wants to use us.
Instead of immediately asking, “Why is this happening to me?” we might be better served to ask, “Lord, what are You doing in me?”
The interruptions we resent today may become the testimonies we rejoice over tomorrow.
Reflection Questions
1. How do I typically respond when God interrupts my plans—frustration, fear, or faith?
2. Have I ever missed seeing God’s work because I was too focused on protecting my routine or comfort?
3. What area of my life right now might God be using to redirect or grow me?
4. Do I truly give God permission to rearrange my plans, or do I quietly resist His leading?
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for being a God who lovingly interrupts my plans with Your better purposes. Forgive me for the times I have resisted You or clung too tightly to my own routines. Give me eyes to see Your hand at work in life’s disruptions and a heart that responds with obedience and faith. Teach me to welcome Your interruptions as opportunities to grow, to trust, and to be used for Your glory. May I never be so focused on my traditions that I miss Your miracles. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
