Scripture Focus
“O Lord, my heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me. But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me. O Israel, hope in the Lord from this time forth and forevermore.” – Psalm 131 (ESV)
Devotional Thought
Contentment is rare in our world. Everywhere we turn, there are messages pushing us to want more, achieve more, or to look back longingly at what once was. Yet David gives us a powerful, countercultural picture in Psalm 131.
Though accused of ambition and self-promotion, David reveals that his heart is not lifted up in pride or driven by status. He paints the image of a weaned child, content and secure in its mother’s arms—not frantic for provision, but trusting and at rest.
This is the posture God desires for us: to rest in Him rather than striving restlessly for position, possessions, or control. True contentment comes not from changing our circumstances, but from entrusting ourselves completely to God’s care. When we live this way, we learn to hope in the Lord—not in our plans, our ambitions, or our achievements.
David reminds us that joy is not found in climbing ladders of success or chasing after recognition. Joy is found in quiet trust, in being still before the Lord, and in finding peace in His perfect provision.

Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for the example of David’s quiet trust in You. Forgive me for the times I chase after ambition, position, or control instead of resting in Your care. Teach me to be like a weaned child, content and secure in Your presence. Help me to quiet my restless soul and to place all my hope in You—today and forever. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
