Scripture Focus
“Jesus answered them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.’” — John 6:26–27 (ESV)
Devotional Thought
After Jesus fed the five thousand, the crowds followed Him eagerly. At first glance, their pursuit appears admirable. But Jesus exposes their true motive: they were not seeking Him because they understood the sign—they were seeking Him because they had been fed.
They wanted another meal, not a Messiah.
They had witnessed one of the most astonishing miracles imaginable, yet they missed its meaning. The bread was never the point. The miracle was meant to reveal who He is. The Bread of Life stood before them, but they were satisfied with loaves that would spoil by the next day.
If we are honest, we often fall into the same pattern. We can become more interested in what Jesus provides than in who Jesus is. In ministry, we may measure success by numbers instead of faithfulness. In life, we may pursue comfort, recognition, security, or answered prayers more than communion with Christ Himself. We may seek His hand rather than His face.
Jesus’ words cut straight to the heart: “Do not work for the food that perishes.” Everything apart from Him is temporary. Achievements fade. Applause quiets. Possessions deteriorate. Even physical provision satisfies only for a moment. But the life He gives endures forever.
Christ is not merely the giver of bread—He is the Bread. He is the lasting sustenance of the soul. To seek Him is to seek what truly satisfies.
When we chase things, we eventually feel the emptiness they leave behind. When we seek Christ, we receive life that cannot decay, diminish, or disappear.
Reflection Questions
- In what ways have I been seeking God’s gifts more than seeking God Himself?
- How do I define “success” in ministry, work, or life—by measurable results or by faithfulness to Christ?
- What “perishable food” have I been laboring for that distracts me from wholehearted devotion to Jesus?
- What practical step can I take this week to shift my focus from what Christ gives to Christ Himself?
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I have sought Your blessings more than I have sought You. Too often I labor for things that will not last, while neglecting the eternal life found in Christ alone. Teach me to hunger for Him above all else. Help me measure success by faithfulness, not results, and joy by Your presence, not by temporary gain. Fix my heart on what endures. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
