“But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people. All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads; ‘He trusts in the LORD; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, for he delights in him!’” — Psalm 22:6–8 (ESV)
Devotional Thought
Psalm 22 pulls back the curtain on the raw honesty of faith under pressure. David does not hide his pain. He does not sanitize his emotions. He describes himself as “a worm,” scorned, despised, mocked, and publicly ridiculed for trusting God. These words are uncomfortable—and deeply familiar.
Centuries later, these same expressions would echo at the foot of the cross. Jesus quoted Psalm 22 as He suffered, not because He lacked faith, but because He was fully honest before the Father. The mockery David experienced became literal reality for Christ: “He trusts in God; let God rescue Him.” What was once poetic lament became fulfilled prophecy.
This reveals a sobering truth for believers today: those who openly trust the Lord should not be surprised when they are misunderstood, ridiculed, or dismissed. Living out faith without apology often invites scorn. The world has always mocked trust that does not bend to its approval.
The flesh wants to respond with anger, defensiveness, or retaliation. But neither David nor Jesus chose that path. David prayed. Jesus prayed. David asked God to be near, to help, to rescue. Jesus asked the Father to forgive those who mocked Him. Both entrusted their pain to God rather than taking justice into their own hands.
And remarkably, Psalm 22 does not end in despair. It turns toward praise. David calls God’s people to glorify Him, stand in awe of Him, remember His faithfulness, and give thanks. The lesson is clear: praise is not reserved for easy seasons. God is worthy whether circumstances improve or not.
Faith that endures mockery without abandoning worship bears powerful witness. When trust remains steady under scorn, God’s glory shines brightest.

Closing Prayer
Lord, You see the moments when faith costs more than it comforts. When I am misunderstood, mocked, or scorned for trusting You, draw me closer to Your heart. Guard me from responding in anger or pride. Teach me to pray as Jesus prayed and to praise as David praised. Help me trust You fully—whether deliverance comes quickly or not. You are worthy in every season. Amen.
