Scripture Focus
6 But godliness with contentment is great gain, 7 for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. 8 But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. 9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. 1 Timothy 6:6–10 (ESV)
Devotional Thought
Great gain is not found in getting more. It’s found in needing less and trusting Christ more.Paul reminds us of two immovable truths:
We arrived with nothing. We will exit the same way.
Everything we clutch tightly in between those two moments is temporary scenery. Not treasure. Not identity. Not security. But Paul gives us the secret most of the world never learns:
Godliness + contentment = great gain. Not wealth + more wealth. Not success + more success. Not platform + popularity.
Godliness. With contentment.
Because a life anchored in Jesus changes the math of value. The world says: The richer you are, the safer you are. God says: The safer you are in Christ, the richer your life becomes.
Psalm 37:16 echoes this truth beautifully: “Better the little that the righteous have than the wealth of many wicked.”
Why? Because “little” in a righteous hand is never little. It becomes enough. And enough becomes peace. And peace becomes wealth the world can’t counterfeit.
Paul warns that the real danger is not money itself, but the love of it — the belief that more will finally satisfy you, finally save you, finally complete you.
It won’t. Greed makes you chase a finish line that keeps moving. Contentment lets you rest before you start running. Many have been ruined trying to gain the world. Many have lost themselves trying to prove their worth. Many have believed the lie that God is good… but not enough.
But here is the reversal the gospel celebrates: The poor, yet content, believer is wealthier than any rich sinner. Because one has much but wants more. The other has little but has Jesus — and wants for nothing.
If you have Jesus and enough to live, you have enough to thrive. Because Christ is not added to your life to become one more treasure. He becomes THE treasure that makes all else pale.
Reflection Questions
1. What is one thing you’re tempted to believe will make you happier than Jesus can?
2. Where does greed make your heart restless — and where does Jesus invite it to rest?
3. How can you practice gratitude today for the “enough” God has already placed in your hand?
Closing Prayer
Lord, Teach us the wisdom of great gain in what remains. We confess that our hearts are too easily pulled toward “more,” even when You have already given us “enough.” Make Jesus our treasure, not our supplement. Shape our desires so that we chase You, not what can never satisfy us. Give us grateful hearts, steady minds, and content souls anchored beneath the sovereign feet of Christ. Let our lives testify that You are enough — and enough with Jesus is great gain. Amen.
