Scripture Focus
“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; 2 but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.” – Psalm 1:1-2 (ESV)
Devotional Thought
Psalm 1 opens the Psalter by showing us two paths and two sources of counsel.
Verse 1 warns us of a slow drift that becomes a settled posture. The psalmist paints a progression: walk → stand → sit.
- Walking in wicked counsel is entertaining ideas apart from God.
- Standing in the way of sinners is adopting lifestyles shaped by those ideas.
- Sitting in the seat of scoffers is becoming rooted in rebellion—eventually mocking what once merely tempted you.
This descent isn’t abrupt. It’s gradual. But the destination is predictable: entrenchment that turns into evangelism for the wrong kingdom—scoffing at the very faith that once called you blessed.
Verse 2 shows the blessed reversal. The righteous also follow a progression, but upward: delight → meditate → transform.
- Their counsel is God’s Word.
- Their rhythm is meditation “day and night.”
- Their joy is delight, not duty.
- Their fruit is change from the inside out.
Both lives are shaped by counsel. One sinks deeper into the world. The other is steadied and reshaped by Scripture.
The question isn’t Will you follow counsel? but Whose voice will shape your steps and secure your seat?
True blessing belongs to the one who lets the law of the Lord be the compass of the heart and the cadence of the mind.
Reflection Questions
- What voices most influence my decisions, habits, and attitudes right now?
- Where have I seen the “walk → stand → sit” drift in my own life or others’?
- Do I approach God’s Word as delight or obligation? What would it look like to genuinely delight in it?
- What is one practical step I can take today to meditate on Scripture more intentionally?
Closing Prayer
Lord,
Guard my steps from the slow drift of worldly counsel. Make Your Word my compass, my delight, and my steady rhythm. Train my heart to love Your law, and tune my mind to meditate on it day and night. Root me in the seat of the righteous, not the scoffers. Change me by Your truth so that my life reflects Your path and Your blessing.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
