“And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt… This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, ‘Out of Egypt I called my son.’”
— Matthew 2:14–15 (ESV)
Devotional Thought
No sooner had the Magi left in worship than danger closed in. Under cover of night, Joseph is awakened by an angel with an urgent command: “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee.” The Savior of the world becomes a refugee before He can even speak a word.
This is the sobering reality of Christmas beyond the manger—the darkness immediately moves to oppose the Light. Herod’s rage reveals a spiritual truth that echoes through history: when Christ enters the world, conflict follows. The enemy recognizes the threat long before the world does.
Yet in the midst of danger, we see God’s sovereign protection. He warns Joseph in a dream. He provides a place of refuge in Egypt. And He fulfills ancient prophecy along the way: “Out of Egypt I called my son.” What once described Israel’s rescue now finds its deeper meaning in Christ, the true Son who will perfectly succeed where the nation once failed.
The flight to Egypt reminds us that God’s plan cannot be stopped, only opposed—and every attempt to stop it ultimately serves to fulfill it. Even fear, exile, and hardship become threads in God’s redemptive design.
The road to the cross begins not with triumph, but with quiet obedience in the night.
