The Witness of Anna

Scripture Focus

“And there was a prophetess, Anna… She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.” — Luke 2:36–38 (ESV)

Devotional Thought

Anna steps onto the stage of Scripture quietly—but her faith resounds loudly. She is elderly, widowed most of her life, and nearly invisible to the world. Yet heaven knows her name. For decades she remained in the temple, worshiping, fasting, praying, and waiting.

And then—at just the right moment—God answers a lifetime of prayer. When Mary and Joseph bring the child Jesus into the temple, Anna recognizes Him immediately. No angel appears to her. No star directs her steps. Her recognition flows from a heart that has been faithfully seeking God for years.

What does she do when she sees Him? She gives thanks—and then she bears witness. Anna becomes one of the first evangelists of the gospel, telling everyone who was hoping for redemption that the Redeemer has arrived.

Anna’s story reminds us that no season of faithful devotion is ever wasted. Her years of quiet obedience prepared her for one holy moment of public testimony. She shows us that worship fuels witness, prayer leads to proclamation, and waiting always gives way to God’s perfect timing.

You are never too old to praise.
You are never too late to testify.
You are never overlooked by God.

  2. How does her example challenge the way you view faithfulness in everyday life?
  3. In what ways can worship and prayer strengthen your witness to others?
  4. Who in your life may be “waiting for redemption” and needs to hear your testimony?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for the testimony of Anna. Teach me to be faithful in prayer, patient in waiting, and bold in witness. Let my worship overflow into gratitude and proclamation. Help me to never grow weary in devotion, knowing You always fulfill Your promises.
Amen.
