Scripture Focus
“And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord… and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, ‘a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.’” — Luke 2:22, 24 (ESV)
Devotional Thought
Only forty days after His birth, the infant Jesus was carried into the temple—not to be admired by crowds, but to be presented in obedience to God’s Law. Mary and Joseph carefully followed the commands given in Leviticus and Exodus. They brought the required purification offering, and they redeemed their firstborn Son as the Law required.
Here is the wonder: the One who gave the Law is now submitting to the Law. The Redeemer is being “redeemed.” The sinless Son is identifying fully with sinful humanity. From His earliest days, Jesus is already walking the road of perfect obedience.
Luke notes that Mary and Joseph offered two turtledoves or pigeons—the offering of the poor. Though heaven’s riches belonged to Him, Christ entered the world in humility. God’s salvation did not arrive in wealth and spectacle, but in quiet obedience and faithfulness.
This moment reminds us that Jesus did not bypass God’s commands—He fulfilled them. Long before the cross, Christ was already actively obeying where Adam failed, where Israel stumbled, and where we fall short. Even as a baby, He stands in our place as our righteous representative.
Christmas is not only about the miracle of His birth—it is also about the mission of His obedience.
