Devotional Thought

Eight days after His birth, in reverent obedience to the Law of Moses, Mary and Joseph brought the infant Christ to be circumcised—and in that sacred moment, they spoke the name that heaven had already chosen: Jesus.

This was far more than a cultural formality. In Jewish life, the naming of a child marked identity, calling, and destiny. Yet this Child’s name was not determined by family lineage, personal preference, or tradition. Long before the manger, before the journey to Bethlehem, before the shepherds and angels—God Himself named this Child.

The name Jesus is the Greek form of Yeshua, meaning “The Lord saves.” His mission was not discovered later in life—it was declared at the very beginning. His very name carried the message of redemption the world had waited centuries to hear.

In this quiet moment of circumcision, we see heaven and earth meet in powerful humility. The eternal Son submits Himself fully to the covenant of Israel. The Lawgiver places Himself under the Law. The Sinless One identifies with sinners. Before He would ever shed blood at Calvary, the first drops of His blood were shed in covenant obedience—a prophetic whisper of the cross to come.

This moment marks the formal beginning of His earthly identity, but it points to an eternal purpose. The One lying in Mary’s arms is the same Savior whose name will one day be confessed by every nation, every tribe, and every tongue. The name spoken softly in a humble home would one day shake the gates of hell.

There is no other name that carries such power. No other name that offers such hope. No other name that rescues the lost, heals the broken, and redeems the guilty.

Jesus—The Lord saves.
And He still does.

Reflection Questions

  1. Why do you think God placed such importance on the name of Jesus being revealed before His birth?
  2. How does this early act of obedience point forward to the cross?
  3. Where do you need to call on the saving power of Jesus’ name in your life today?

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus,
We bow in awe of Your holy name—the name that declares Your mission and displays Your mercy. Thank You for humbling Yourself to step fully into our world and our brokenness. Thank You for saving us not only by Your power, but also through Your obedience and sacrifice. Teach us to trust Your name, to proclaim it boldly, and to rest in the salvation it promises. In the saving name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
