Scripture Focus — Luke 1:67–79 (ESV)
“Because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high to give light to those who sit in darkness…”
Devotional Thought
For nine long months, Zechariah had lived in silence.
Because he doubted the angel’s message, his voice was taken—until the moment God’s promise was fulfilled. When John is born and named just as the angel said, Zechariah’s tongue is loosed. And the first sound that pours out is not small talk. It is prophecy.
Filled with the Holy Spirit, Zechariah declares that salvation has arrived. He speaks of a “horn of salvation” rising from the house of David. He reminds Israel that God has not forgotten His covenant, not forgotten His mercy, not forgotten His promises made long ago.
Then he turns toward his infant son—and speaks tenderly of John’s mission: he will be the prophet of the Most High, preparing the way of the Lord. Before Jesus ever walks the roads of Galilee, God prepares a voice to cry out in the wilderness.
And then comes one of the most beautiful images in all of Scripture:
“The sunrise shall visit us from on high.”
After centuries of darkness, light is breaking in.
After silence, salvation is speaking.
After waiting, hope is rising.
Christmas is not just about a baby—it is about light invading darkness. It is about forgiveness breaking chains. It is about God stepping into human history to guide our feet into the path of peace.
The dawn is coming.
And it begins before the manger.

Prayer
Lord, thank You for being the Light that meets us in our darkness. Thank You for forgiving doubt, restoring voices, and keeping every promise You have ever spoken. Let the sunrise of Christ shine into every shadowed place in my life. Use me to prepare the way for others to find Your peace. In Jesus’ name, amen.
