“When Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit… ‘Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!’” – Luke 1:41-42

Devotional Thought

This is the first true joy explosion of the Christmas story.

Mary has just received the impossible news—she will bear the Son of God. Almost immediately, she travels to see Elizabeth, the one person who can fully understand what God is doing. The moment Mary’s voice reaches Elizabeth’s ears, something miraculous happens: John the Baptist leaps in the womb, and Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit.

Before Jesus ever preaches a sermon… Before He opens blind eyes… Before He heals the sick… He brings joy simply by His presence.

Even unseen, still in the womb, Christ causes the Spirit to stir and joy to overflow. The unborn John responds exactly as he was created to do—to point to Jesus and rejoice in His coming.

Elizabeth’s Spirit-filled blessing confirms everything the angel told Mary: “Blessed is the fruit of your womb!” God doesn’t leave Mary alone in her calling—He strengthens her with joyful confirmation through another believer.

This moment reminds us that joy is not rooted in circumstances—it is rooted in Christ’s presence. When Jesus is near, joy follows. When the Spirit testifies to Jesus, hearts leap. And when God is at work, He often confirms His promises through the voices of faithful believers around us.

Christmas joy didn’t start in a manger.
It started in a womb.

Reflection Questions

  1. Where have you seen God confirm His work in your life through another believer?
  2. Is your joy currently rooted in circumstances—or in Christ Himself?
  3. How can your words encourage someone else the way Elizabeth encouraged Mary?

Closing Prayer

Lord, thank You for the gift of joy that comes from Your presence. Thank You that even before Jesus was born, You were already bringing life, confirmation, and celebration through Him. Help me to recognize Your Spirit at work and to be a voice of encouragement to others. Let my heart leap with joy because Christ is near. In Jesus’ name, amen.
