Scripture Focus — Isaiah 11:1–10 (ESV)
“There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit. And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him…”
Devotional Thought
Isaiah paints a remarkable picture of hope rising out of devastation. Israel had been reduced to a “stump”—cut down by exile, judgment, and their own rebellion. From that seemingly dead stump, God promised new life:
a Branch… a King… a Messiah.
This Branch would come from the line of Jesse—not from David’s throne at its height, but from humble origins, from the seemingly forgotten roots of God’s covenant promise. In other words, when the dynasty looked finished, God was just getting started.
Isaiah gives us a breathtaking portrait of this coming King:
A Spirit-Filled Messiah
“The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him…”
Jesus would live, teach, heal, and lead in the power of the Spirit—perfect wisdom, perfect righteousness, perfect understanding.
Every decision He makes is right. Every judgment He renders is true.
He is the King we always needed but could never produce on our own.
A Righteous Judge
“With righteousness He shall judge the poor…”
Unlike earthly rulers who are swayed by appearances or influenced by corrupt motives, Jesus judges with perfect equity.
He lifts the humble, defends the vulnerable, and exposes wickedness.
His rule is not political—it is holy.
A Powerful Defender
“…He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth…”
This is not a weak or sentimental Messiah. His Word has authority. His truth transforms. His justice prevails.
The same voice that calmed storms will one day bring every nation into account.
A Kingdom of Peace
Isaiah envisions a world where predators rest beside prey, where danger disappears, and where peace is not a fragile dream but a permanent reality.
This is the world Jesus will bring when He returns—the world our hearts long for but cannot produce.
A Global Hope
“The nations shall inquire of Him…”
This promise stretches far beyond Israel: Jesus will be the rallying point for the whole world.
Every tribe, every nation, every people will find their peace, unity, and hope in Him.
This Branch from Jesse is no small sprout—He is the King of Kings.
He came once in humility.
He will come again in glory.
And one day, His peace will cover the whole earth like waters cover the sea.
