“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace…” – Isaiah 9:6 (ESV)
Devotional Thought
Long before Mary held Jesus in her arms, long before the shepherds heard angels singing, long before a star rested over Bethlehem—God had already revealed exactly who this Child would be. Isaiah spoke these words more than 700 years before Christ’s birth, declaring not just that a Messiah would come, but what kind of Messiah He would be.
Isaiah doesn’t describe a vague spiritual figure or a symbolic character. He gives titles—divine titles—that no ordinary child could bear:
Wonderful Counselor
Jesus is the One whose wisdom is flawless, whose guidance is perfect, and whose plans never fail. In a world full of confusion, competing voices, and shallow counsel, Christ stands as the divine source of truth. His wisdom doesn’t merely inform—it transforms.
Mighty God
Isaiah leaves no room for misunderstanding: the Messiah would not simply represent God—He is God. The Child born in Bethlehem is the eternal Son, full of divine power, authority, and strength. The manger doesn’t diminish His majesty; it displays His humility.
Everlasting Father
This does not refer to Jesus replacing God the Father, but to His fatherly rule—His care, protection, and eternal nature. The Child in the manger is the timeless One who holds our lives in His hands, shepherding us with compassion and sustaining us with His presence.
Prince of Peace
This is more than the absence of conflict. Jesus brings peace with God, peace within our hearts, and ultimately peace to the world. Through His cross and resurrection, He ends the war between God and man and offers reconciliation that lasts forever.
These names reveal the identity and mission of Jesus:
He came not merely to bring salvation—He came as God Himself, wrapped in flesh, bringing wisdom, power, care, and lasting peace.
Christmas reminds us that the Child in the manger is not small, weak, or ordinary. He is the Wonderful Counselor who guides us, the Mighty God who saves us, the Everlasting Father who keeps us, and the Prince of Peace who restores us.
God didn’t just promise a Messiah—He promised that the Messiah would be God with us… and He kept that promise perfectly.
