True Wisdom from Above

Scripture Focus

“Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.” — James 3:13–18, ESV

Devotional Thought

The world celebrates ambition, competition, and self-promotion, but James warns that this kind of “wisdom” is “earthly, unspiritual, demonic,” producing nothing but disorder and conflict. It is mostly concerned with “winning” an argument or conflict and looking good. I put winning in quotations here because the world’s version of wisdom leaves one man standing with arms raised and the other frustrated and hurt, so you have to wonder if it’s truly a success in the long run.

By contrast, “the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.” When God’s wisdom governs our hearts, pride fades, peace grows, and righteousness takes root.

True wisdom isn’t only concerned with who is right and who is wrong; it’s also concerned with maintaining working relationships and moving forward in unity. It doesn’t just sound right—it lives right, and the community grows stronger as it moves forward together.

Reflection Questions

1. Which traits of “earthly wisdom” are most tempting for you to fall into (jealousy, ambition, pride, etc.)?

2. How does heavenly wisdom show itself in your relationships, your words, and your decisions?

3. What might change in your church or home if everyone sought to sow peace instead of proving a point?

Closing Prayer

Lord, give me wisdom from above—wisdom that is pure, peaceable, gentle, and full of mercy. Guard my heart from jealousy, selfish ambition, and pride. Teach me to walk in humility and to seek peace in every relationship. Let the fruit of righteousness grow in me and through me, that my life might honor You and bless others. In Jesus’ name, amen.
