Stop Being Double-Minded

“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” — James 4:8 (ESV)

Devotional Thought

James gives us both a diagnosis and a cure for spiritual instability. The “double-minded” person he describes is torn between two worlds — the call of God and the pull of the flesh. This conflict isn’t unfamiliar to believers; it’s the ongoing tension between our redeemed spirit and our sinful nature. One moment we long for holiness, and the next we chase after things that leave us empty.

The solution, James says, is simple but demanding: draw near to God. This isn’t just an emotional desire or a one-time decision — it’s a daily pursuit. It means intentionally stepping away from sin, confessing what defiles our hearts, and choosing to fix our minds on God’s truth. As we do, something beautiful happens: God draws near to us. The distance between us and Him isn’t measured in miles, but in moments — moments of neglect, distraction, or disobedience. But when we turn back, even slightly, He meets us there with mercy and grace.

Being double-minded weakens our walk with Christ because we’re feeding the wrong appetite. As someone once said, “Which dog wins the fight? The one you feed the most.” If we keep feeding our flesh, our spiritual hunger fades. But if we feed our souls with Scripture, prayer, and worship, our desires begin to align with God’s heart. The closer we draw to Him, the more single-minded and steadfast we become.

God’s invitation is still open: “Draw near.” The promise that follows is just as sure — “He will draw near to you.”

Reflection Questions

  1. What habits or distractions are keeping you from drawing near to God?
  2. How can you “feed” your spirit more than your flesh this week?
  3. What practical step can you take today to pursue a closer walk with Him?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for inviting me to draw near to You. Forgive me for the times I’ve been double-minded and distracted by the world. Cleanse my heart, purify my thoughts, and help me desire You above all else. Teach me to feed my soul with Your Word and walk daily in Your presence. Draw me close, Lord, and make me steadfast in my devotion to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
