The Worst Cover-Up in History

“While they were going, behold, some of the guard went into the city and told the chief priests all that had taken place.… And this story has been spread among the Jews to this day.” — Matthew 28:11–15 (ESV)

Devotional Thought

The resurrection of Jesus was the most powerful event in human history—so powerful that Satan immediately sought to cover it up. The soldiers who witnessed the empty tomb ran to report what had happened. They had seen the impossible: the stone rolled away, the angel of the Lord shining like lightning, and the tomb empty. The truth was undeniable. Yet the religious leaders, desperate to preserve their influence, quickly constructed a lie. They bribed the guards, invented a story, and spread deception to protect their power.

This moment shows Satan’s favorite weapon—deception. He doesn’t need to convince everyone completely; he only needs to appeal to those who want to believe the lie. Human pride and fear do the rest. The chief priests wanted control. The soldiers wanted safety. Satan simply provided the narrative that let them justify their choices. Transparency terrifies the enemy, because truth always exposes his schemes.

Even today, the enemy still works this way—distorting truth, twisting motives, and using religious or respected voices to spread half-truths. But deception can never outlast the resurrection. The tomb was—and remains—empty. The truth of Jesus’ victory over death shines brighter than every lie ever told.

When we encounter deceit—in the world, in relationships, or even within religious circles—we must cling to truth, no matter how unpopular it is. Jesus said, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Satan cannot stand where truth is spoken and light is revealed.

Reflection Questions

1. Why do you think deception often feels easier to believe than truth?

2. How can you practice transparency and truth in a world that rewards image over integrity?

3. In what areas of life do you need to ask God to expose lies and reveal His truth?

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You that no lie of the enemy can overcome Your truth. You are the risen Savior, and Your light exposes every shadow. Help me to walk in honesty and discernment, rejecting deceit in all its forms. Give me courage to speak truth, even when it’s uncomfortable, and to live in a way that reveals the power of Your resurrection. Amen.
