Making Disciples Day 6: Setting the Example

Scripture Focus

“In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”— Acts 20:35 (ESV)

Devotional Thought

Disciple-making has never been about giving orders—it’s about giving yourself. As Paul spoke his final words to the Ephesian elders, he didn’t point to his authority, his knowledge, or even his accomplishments. Instead, he pointed to his example. He had worked with his own hands, provided for his own needs, and refused to burden anyone. His life was a living illustration of what it means to serve and give generously.

Paul knew that spiritual leadership is not imposed; it is demonstrated. The gospel spreads most powerfully through believers who model the heart of Christ in daily life. Jesus Himself set the ultimate example—not demanding to be served, but pouring out His life for others (Matthew 20:28). Paul simply followed the pattern Jesus set…and then invited others to follow him as he followed Christ.

True generosity is not measured by the size of the gift but by the posture of the heart. When we meet needs with joy, give quietly without applause, and serve even when no one notices, we are setting an example worth following. Our lives become an invitation for others to imitate Christ.

Paul’s final reminder echoes with simplicity and power: It is more blessed to give than to receive. When we give our time, our energy, our compassion, and our resources, we reflect the very character of Jesus. And in doing so, we help shape disciples who will carry that same example forward.

Reflection Questions

1. Where in your life is God calling you to model Christlike generosity and service?

2. Who is watching your example—and how can your life point them toward Jesus more clearly?

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for setting the perfect example of humble service and generous love. Help me to follow in Your footsteps. Make my life a pattern others can imitate—one marked by compassion, sacrifice, and joy. Teach me to give freely, serve willingly, and lead by example for the glory of Your name. Amen.
