Making Disciples Day 5: Guard the Flock

Scripture Focus

“I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them. Therefore be alert.”— Acts 20:29–31 (ESV)

Devotional Thought

Paul’s farewell to the Ephesian elders is filled with emotion—but also with warning. He loved these leaders deeply, yet he knew danger would come. “Fierce wolves,” he said, would rise up both from outside and inside the church, twisting truth and leading people astray.

Paul’s charge wasn’t just to teach the flock—it was to guard it. True discipleship isn’t only about helping others grow; it’s also about protecting them from deception. Every generation of believers faces false teaching, clever lies, and spiritual distortions that sound almost right but lead hearts far from God.

To guard the flock, we must stay alert and anchored in Scripture. The only way to recognize falsehood is to be deeply familiar with truth. Paul didn’t build disciples who depended on him; he trained them to depend on God’s Word.

Today, we are called to do the same. Whether you lead a family, a small group, or a friend closer to Christ, you have a sacred responsibility—to pray, to teach truth faithfully, and to protect against anything that would harm their faith.

Guarding the flock isn’t an act of fear—it’s an act of love. Shepherds stand watch because souls matter.

Reflection Questions

1. How can you stay spiritually alert and grounded in God’s truth?

2. Who has God placed in your life for you to help guard and guide in faith?

Closing Prayer

Lord, thank You for entrusting me with people to love and lead. Help me to stay alert and rooted in Your Word. Give me discernment to recognize what is false and courage to stand for truth. Teach me to protect others with the same love and vigilance You show toward me. Amen.
