Scripture Focus
“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!” — Matthew 23:37 (ESV)
Devotional Thought
These words are among the most tender ever spoken by Jesus—and also some of the saddest. After confronting the hypocrisy of the Pharisees, Jesus looks out over Jerusalem and laments. The city that should have embraced Him has rejected Him. The people chosen to prepare the way for the Messiah have turned away from their own Redeemer.
Yet notice His heart: it is not one of rage but of grief. He doesn’t speak as an angry judge but as a heartbroken parent. “How often I wanted to gather your children together,” He says, “as a hen gathers her brood under her wings.” What a picture of divine love—arms open wide, ready to protect, comfort, and heal. The tragedy is not that He refused them, but that they were not willing.
This moment shows us the tenderness of God’s heart toward every wanderer. Even when we resist Him, His desire is to draw us close. Like chicks running from the shelter of their mother, we often chase things that promise freedom but lead to danger. Yet His invitation remains: Come home. I still want to gather you.
The safest place In all the world is not a circumstance, a plan, or a possession—it’s under the wings of Jesus. There we find grace, rest, and refuge for our weary souls.
Reflection Questions
1. What does Jesus’ longing over Jerusalem teach you about His love for people who reject Him?
2. When have you resisted God’s call to draw closer, and how did He pursue you anyway?
3. What does it mean for you today to rest “under His wings”?
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus,Thank You for Your patient, pursuing love. Even when I stray, You still long to gather me close. Forgive me for the times I’ve resisted Your call or chosen my own way. Draw me under the shelter of Your wings, and keep my heart tender toward You. May I live each day resting in Your protection and grace.Amen.
