Scripture Focus
“Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.” — Romans 10:9–10 (ESV)
Devotional Thought
Romans 10 brings balance to the mystery of salvation. After Paul’s deep reflection in Romans 9 on God’s sovereign choice, he turns here to our personal response—what we do with the grace God extends. Salvation isn’t achieved through effort or inherited by birthright; it’s received through faith. But this faith isn’t just a mental agreement—it’s a heart-level belief that transforms everything.
Paul says, “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord…” That’s more than words. To confess Jesus as Lord is to surrender your will, your pride, and your life to His authority. And to “believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead” means trusting completely in the finished work of Christ—His death and resurrection as your only hope for forgiveness and new life.
This confession and belief mark the beginning of a lifelong relationship with God. The word “call” in verse 13—“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved”—carries the sense of an ongoing dependence on Him. True faith doesn’t fade; it continues calling, trusting, and confessing Jesus as Lord day after day.
Salvation, then, is both a decisive moment and a daily confession. God’s sovereign grace awakens the heart, and the believer responds in faith and obedience that flows from within.
Reflection Questions
1. What does it mean for you personally to confess Jesus as Lord in your daily life?
2. How can you cultivate a deeper, ongoing dependence on the Lord instead of treating salvation as a one-time event?
3. Are there areas where you need to surrender more fully to Christ’s lordship today?
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, I confess that You are Lord. I believe in my heart that You were raised from the dead and that You live to save and transform. Help me to walk in continual trust and obedience, calling on You daily for strength and grace. Let my life be a living confession of Your lordship and love. Amen.
