“Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them.” — Ephesians 5:11 (ESV)
Devotional Thought
Each year as autumn leaves fall and October 31st approaches, Christians face a familiar question: What should we do about Halloween? For many, it’s a night of candy, costumes, and laughter — children dressed as firefighters, princesses, or superheroes knocking on doors for treats. For others, it carries darker undertones that celebrate fear, superstition, or evil. How can believers respond wisely and faithfully?
Scripture gives us timeless guidance. Paul reminds us to “have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness” (Ephesians 5:11) — a call to reject anything that glorifies sin or evil. At the same time, Romans 12:2 urges us not to conform to the world’s ways but to let our minds be transformed by the truth of God’s Word. In other words, we don’t have to imitate the world to engage with it. We can participate differently — with discernment and purpose.
Halloween, like many cultural moments, can be redeemed. For Christian families, it can be a chance to shine light in the darkness — to show kindness, share the gospel, and model joy that comes from Christ. Opening your door with generosity, offering candy and perhaps a Scripture verse or gospel tract, and using the evening to build community rather than withdraw in fear, turns a night of superstition into an opportunity for witness.
Still, we must stay spiritually alert. Peter warns us that “your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion” (1 Peter 5:8), and Paul reminds us that “Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14). The line between innocence and compromise can blur if we’re not watchful. That’s why discernment matters. We can enjoy seasonal fun — pumpkins, costumes, candy, and fellowship — while steering clear of anything that honors evil or trivializes sin.
Light and darkness cannot coexist (2 Corinthians 6:14). But light does not hide — it shines. So rather than fear the shadows, let’s illuminate them. When we stand firm in Christ, even a dark night can become a moment to display His glory.
Reflection Questions
- How can you and your family honor Christ during cultural celebrations like Halloween?
- What practical ways can you “shine light” in your neighborhood on October 31st?
- Are there areas where you’ve allowed cultural conformity to dull your spiritual discernment?
Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You for calling me out of darkness into Your marvelous light. Help me to walk wisely, to discern what pleases You, and to use every opportunity — even those the world sees as trivial — to reflect Your goodness. Keep me alert to the enemy’s deception, and let my life shine brightly with Your truth and grace. Amen.
