Testing the Lord

“And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven.” — Matthew 16:1 (ESV)

Devotional Thought

It’s striking how often unbelief disguises itself as curiosity. In this passage, the Pharisees and Sadducees come together—two groups usually opposed to each other—to test Jesus. They ask Him to perform a sign from heaven, as if more evidence might finally convince them. Yet by this point in His ministry, Jesus had already healed the sick, raised the dead, calmed storms, and fed thousands. Their request wasn’t born out of a desire to believe, but a determination to resist.

What’s chilling is how closely their demand resembles Satan’s temptation in the wilderness. Satan urged Jesus to prove His divine authority by performing a miracle—“If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down.” Jesus replied, “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.” (Matthew 4:7) The religious leaders’ demand for a sign is the same kind of test—an attempt to make the Son of God dance to their tune, to perform on their terms.

How sobering that these men—respected for their knowledge of Scripture—ended up mirroring the very attitude of the enemy. They were not seekers of truth, but skeptics of pride. Their hearts were hard, and no miracle would ever be enough for them.

We must guard our hearts from the same danger. It’s easy to demand that God “prove” Himself when life doesn’t go our way—to say, “If You really love me, then do this.” But true faith doesn’t test God; it trusts Him. It doesn’t say, “Show me first,” but rather, “I believe You, Lord, even when I don’t understand.”

Reflection Questions

  1. Are there ways you’ve been testing God rather than trusting Him?
  2. What miracles has He already shown you that remind you of His faithfulness?
  3. How can you nurture a faith that obeys before it demands proof?

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, forgive me for the times I’ve doubted Your goodness and demanded proof instead of trusting Your Word. Strengthen my faith to believe what You’ve already revealed, and guard my heart from pride and unbelief. Help me to trust You completely, even when I cannot see. Amen.
