Scripture Focus
“Through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.” — Romans 1:5–6 (ESV)

Devotional Thought
Romans 1 is a treasure chest of gospel truth, and in these verses, Paul reminds us of the heartbeat of his mission—and ours. He says that through Christ he received grace and apostleship “to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of His name among all nations.”

This phrase—the obedience of faith—is deeply significant. It is not obedience that earns faith, but obedience that flows from faith. The moment a sinner hears the gospel, the Spirit awakens their heart to see both their need and Christ’s sufficiency. That response—repenting of sin, believing in the Lord Jesus, and surrendering to His rule—is the true obedience of faith. It is the only fitting response to the grace of God revealed in His Son.

Paul’s mission, and by extension ours, was threefold:

  1. To bring about the obedience of faith—to see hearts transformed by the gospel’s power.
  2. For the sake of His name—that Jesus Christ would be glorified above every other name.
  3. Among all nations—that this saving grace would reach every tribe, tongue, and people before the end.

This mission continues today. Every time the gospel is preached, every time a believer lives faithfully before others, and every time someone surrenders to Christ, God’s eternal purpose moves forward. The obedience of faith is not limited to one generation or one people—it will spread to the ends of the earth, until the name of Jesus is exalted among all nations.

Reflection Questions

1. What does “the obedience of faith” look like in your daily walk with Christ?

    2. How can your obedience point others to the glory of His name?

    3. In what ways can you participate in making Christ known among all nations—even right where you are?

    Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for calling me to belong to You. Teach me what it means to walk in the obedience of faith—to trust You fully and follow You wholeheartedly. Use my life to glorify Your name and to spread Your truth to others. Amen.
